Dallas Morning News: Building on 20 Years of Downtown Progress

Downtown Dallas is more alive than ever, writes The Dallas Morning News editorial board. Now is the time to seize the moment and build on decades of transformation — and a recent boost from the public-private Safe in the City initiative.

State of Downtown

Dallas Police Chief Comeaux Delivering on Safe in the City Promise

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux headlined DDI’s recent State of Downtown event. In conversation with DDI President and CEO Jennifer Scripps, the chief touched on our progress to date, including:

  • Violent crime is down in Downtown by 16% as compared to last year.

  • DPD now has more officers assigned to patrol Downtown than ever before, a boost from about 90 officers last year to 120 today.

  • Traffic enforcement is another piece of his Downtown strategy, with nearly 1,500 citations issued in recent months.

Scripps also announced that the Safe in the City initiative is bolstered by private fundraising that totals $2.5 million to date.

Safe in the City is a multi-pronged campaign to improve public safety and aid rehousing and homelessness solutions in the core of our city. The private financial contributions are from leading business, civic, and philanthropic organizations to support increased security, homelessness response, video monitoring, and an initial lease period for a planned Downtown law enforcement command center. The contributions are as follows:

•    Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT): $1.5 million
•    Dallas Regional Chamber (DRC): $500,000
•    Dallas Citizens Council: $400,000
•    Hoblitzelle Foundation: $100,000

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson also celebrated the progress of the Safe in the City initiative in his 7th State of the City address last week. “We’ve made progress in our war on violent crime,” the mayor said. “Nowhere is this more evident than in the Central Business District.”

Watch the clip above for everything the mayor had to say about Downtown progress and key decisions that lie ahead on AT&T, Dallas City Hall, and the Dallas Mavericks and Stars.

Safe in the City Spotlight

Dallas Regional Chamber CEO Dale Petroskey’s Legacy

For 12 years, Dale Petroskey has led the Dallas Regional Chamber from his corner office on the 26th floor of Downtown’s Ross Tower. That gives him a prime view of the explosive growth in and around Downtown, the Dallas Business Journal writes in a piece on Petroskey’s selection as the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in the 2025 C-Suite Leaders Awards.

Petroskey, a key backer of the Safe in the City initiative, is retiring from his DRC post at the end of the year.
